How to measure your bra size at home

A soft tape, a mirror and five minutes are all you need to find a more comfortable fit.

Many women wear a bra size that is not quite right for them, often because sizes change over time and vary between styles. The good news is that measuring yourself at home is quick and simple.

What you need

  • A soft measuring tape
  • A mirror, so you can check the tape stays level
  • A thin, non-padded bra, or none at all

Step one: your band

Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust. Keep it level all the way around and breathe out normally. This number guides your band size.

Step two: your bust

Measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust, again keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Do not pull it tight.

Step three: your cup

Subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement. Each inch of difference is roughly one cup size: one inch is an A, two inches a B, three a C and four a D.

Check the fit

A good fit is the real test. The band should sit level and feel secure on the loosest hook, the cups should lie smooth without gaps or spilling, and the straps should stay put without digging in.
